5 Common Skincare Mistakes You Might Be Making (and How To Fix Them)

When it comes to skincare, even the most dedicated routines can sometimes miss the mark. Between viral beauty hacks, endless product launches, and contradicting advice online, it’s easy to form habits that feel helpful but quietly hold your skin back.

Over time, I’ve realised that healthy, radiant skin is less about perfection and more about understanding. Once you learn how your skin behaves and what it truly needs  it becomes much easier to nurture that natural glow.

Here are five subtle but common skincare mistakes many of us make, and how a few thoughtful adjustments can completely change the way your skin looks and feels.

Cleansing Too Harshly or Too Often

Cleansing is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine, but it’s also one of the easiest to overdo. Many people equate that tight, squeaky-clean feeling with freshness  when in reality, it’s a sign that your skin’s natural oils have been stripped away.

Over-cleansing or using a harsh face wash can leave your barrier dry, sensitive, and prone to breakouts. When that happens, your skin often produces even more oil to compensate, leading to an ongoing cycle of imbalance.

The best approach is gentle consistency. Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type  foaming gels work well for oily or combination skin, while creamy or hydrating formulas are ideal for dry and sensitive types. Cleanse once in the morning and once at night, using lukewarm water and soft motions. Your skin should feel refreshed and comfortable, not tight or irritated.

Neglecting Sunscreen — Especially Indoors

If there’s one non-negotiable step in skincare, it’s sunscreen. Yet, it’s still one that many people skip, especially when they’re not spending the day outside. The truth is, UVA rays the ones responsible for premature aging and sun spots can penetrate clouds and even glass. That means your skin is still exposed to damage while driving, sitting by a window, or working near daylight.

Daily SPF is the difference between maintaining your glow long-term and dealing with fine lines or uneven tone later. A lightweight, broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is ideal for everyday wear. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine and don’t forget your neck and ears.

Going Overboard with Exfoliation

There’s something so satisfying about smooth, polished skin after exfoliating  but it’s easy to take it too far. With so many scrubs, acids, and toners on the market, many routines accidentally double up on exfoliating ingredients without realising it.

Over-exfoliation can lead to redness, sensitivity, and breakouts that look like irritation. Your skin barrier needs time to renew naturally, and constant exfoliation can disrupt that process. A more balanced approach makes all the difference. Two to three times per week is plenty for most skin types, and alternating between a chemical exfoliant (like an AHA or BHA) and a gentle physical scrub can help you maintain clarity and glow without overdoing it. If your skin feels warm, tight, or flaky, that’s your cue to give it a few days of rest and focus on barrier repair instead. Your skin doesn’t need to be polished every day to be healthy sometimes it just needs to be left alone to breathe.

Layering Products in the Wrong Order

A well-layered skincare routine can make products work beautifully together, but a poorly layered one can do the exact opposite. The order you apply your products affects how well they absorb and perform and this is where many routines quietly lose their effectiveness.

The key is to apply products from thinnest to thickest texture: cleanser, toner (if you use one), serum, moisturiser, and finally sunscreen. This order ensures that lighter formulas can penetrate the skin, while heavier ones lock in hydration on top.

Mixing active ingredients incorrectly  like layering retinol with acids or vitamin C  can also lead to irritation or cancel out their benefits. Instead, keep strong actives separate: use your brightening or exfoliating products in the morning and save retinol or repairing treatments for the evening. Skincare should be simple, not overwhelming. When each product has a clear role, your skin can respond with balance and clarity.

Forgetting the Neck and Hands

We tend to focus so much on our faces that we often forget about two areas that reveal age the quickest  the neck and hands. These parts of the body have thinner skin and fewer oil glands, which means they lose elasticity and hydration faster than the rest of your complexion.

By skipping them, you’re leaving them unprotected from daily sun exposure and dryness. The good news is that it’s incredibly easy to fix. Simply extend your skincare steps beyond your jawline. Whatever you apply to your face,  from cleanser and serum to SPF. Bring it down your neck and across the backs of your hands. Over time, this small habit helps create a smoother, more youthful appearance that looks consistent all around your body.

The best skincare routines aren’t the ones filled with the most products, they’re the ones built with understanding. Learning what your skin truly needs and when to step back is what transforms both your results and your confidence.

Mistakes are just part of the process. What matters most is adjusting with care, staying consistent, and treating your skin gently every day. When you simplify, listen, and protect, your skin rewards you in return — with balance, radiance, and that effortless glow we all strive for.
